Meeting lyricist Bernie Taupin, Elton John began his career mainly as a songwriter. It was not until 1968 that Elton John began recording his own work and in 1969 he released his first album to nominal success.

Elton John persevered and despite the unsuccessful release of his first album he became the biggest pop star in the 70's. As a solo artist, he demonstrated his versatility and his ability to sing and write music in any genre.
